Why Do Adults Fear Water?
Fear of water isn’t just about never learning to swim—it often runs much deeper. In fact, most adults struggling with water confidence fall into one of these five categories:
First-hand experience
A past traumatic event, like a near-drowning or panic episode in water.
Second-hand experience
Witnessing someone else struggle or hearing fearful stories about water.
Social pre-conditioning
Growing up around family members who feared water, unknowingly passing that fear down.
Can swim, but still fearful
That’s right! Many adults can physically swim but still feel anxious, tense, or unsafe in deeper water.
Undeveloped water skills
A lack of proper training or gaps in technique, leading to discomfort and uncertainty.

Horacio Daniel PalacioTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a class with Hyun Soo and really enjoyed it! The session was great, and the pool was perfect. Looking forward to coming back for the next class! Aneesh MistryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a stroke correction lesson with Ruby in the Willoughby pool. Ruby is excellent and I would thoroughly recommend lessons with her. She articulates cues well to help you think about how changes should feel. I've left feeling confident about how I will begin progressing my stroke in many different ways. Yvonne TseTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My son had a lesson with Head Coach Jason to help him improve his stroke technique for competition. It was awesome and fantastic. Jason is very professional and attentive. His eye for detail was incredible, he identified issues with my son’s stroke that had been holding him back for years. His instruction was clear, and he provided consistent feedback that helped him to correct his technique. My son is so happy to learn from him and looks forward to having the next lesson. I highly recommend Coach Jason to any serious swimmer looking to refine their skills. Soraia SousaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I did the ocean confidence session this morning with Jason at Malabar and it was awesome. He gave us the basics of ocean swimming, what to look out for and best of all how you remain calm and confident in the ocean. All round nice guy and I would recommend this session if you're a little apprehensive but super keen for an ocean swim. I loved it so much I'm signing up for the social swim next! Phoebe ChiuTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had a 1:1 stroke correction with Ruby. She was attentive and gave me feedback lap by lap on what I was doing well and what needed improvement. We also worked on incorporating some drills. I would highly recommend her if you are looking to be a more efficient swimmer 🏊♀️! Kam ETrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Fantastic experience with Ruby. Both my children had lessons with Ruby at Willoughby and she was fantastic. She was patient, encouraging and made the lessons fun from the start. My kids instantly felt confident in the water with her. As a mum I appreciate how calm reassuring and professional she was. Highly recommend! KamalaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This was my first session and Ruby was incredibly patient and pleasant to deal with. She gave me alot of useful feedback that I can use to improve. I'll definitely go back for more lessons! Matthew MarichTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Would highly reccomend private swimming lessons with Jason. I reached out with quite specific requirements that I needed to meet for cabin crew recruitment, specifically in relation to their “swim test”. Jason was able to tailor his teaching methods and practise tasks in order to best prepare me for the day! For example, he came up with ways for me to mimic the “tugging” or saving someone in the water, and found creative ways to best prepare me for the day. Generally speaking, he was very attentive and supportive, and always came up with personalised advice which he believed would help in learning how to swim! Overall, I ended up passing, and would highly recommend this company! Robert PostemaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Very good & helpful session with Hyun Soo Hwang today working on stroke & breathing issues Chris KondouTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. What a great experience, without doubt Jason and his team at Swimly have been awesome. Knowledgeable & expertly balancing the tightrope to get you out of your comfort zone whilst at the same time creating a safe environment.
