Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre

Cook And Phillip Pool
Located under St Mary’s Cathedral, Cook and Phillip Park Pool is the underground pool hidden away from the hustle of the CBD above.
Heated to 26oC year-round, this is a great location if you are coming from outside the inner-city circle.

Swimming at Our Indoor Pools – What You Need to Know
Do I need to pay pool entry?
Yes, both facilities require standard pool entry fees, which are paid directly at reception.
Is the pool heated?
Yes, both Cook + Phillip and Ian Thorpe pools are heated and suitable for year-round swimming.
Is parking available?
Cook + Phillip: Paid parking is available nearby at Secure Parking, Cathedral Street.
Ian Thorpe: There is a paid car park underneath the Centre. Street address is 299 Pyrmont Street, Ultimo
Can spectators or children watch the session?
Yes, spectators are welcome, but they must pay the facility’s spectator entry fee. Children must be supervised and are not permitted on pool deck during coaching sessions.
Can I access the gym or spa at the facility?
Yes, access is available to the public, but it is separate from Swimly and may incur an additional fee.
What is the pool depth?
Both pools have a depth range from 1.2m to 2m, allowing for standing areas and deeper water for more advanced drills.

Swimming at Our Outdoor Pools – What You Need to Know
Is the pool heated?
The pool is solar heated and only suitable during the warmer months. It is not in use during winter due to lower water temperatures.
Is parking available?
Yes, street parking is available close to the pool entrance.
Is this a public pool?
No, this is a private residential pool exclusively accessed by Swimly clients during booked sessions. This ensures privacy, calm, and a highly focused environment.
Are change rooms and toilets available?
Basic facilities are available on-site. We recommend arriving swim-ready for convenience.
Who is this location best for?
Ideal for adults seeking privacy, trauma-informed sessions, or water confidence support—especially those who feel uncomfortable in public pool settings. Also suited for children needing a quiet, distraction-free learning space.
What is the pool depth?
The pool has a shallow entry point of 1.2m, gradually deepening to approximately 1.5m—ideal for building water confidence and practicing safe progression.

Also known as Long Bay, this calm and protected beach is perfect for ocean swimming, with clear waters, easy entry, and plenty of marine life to explore.

Build Confidence in Sydney’s Safest Bays – What You Need to Know
What if the weather is bad?
If conditions are unsafe due to wind, swell or storms, your session will be rescheduled or moved to an alternative location. We’ll confirm changes in advance.
Is it safe for beginners or people with water fear?
Yes. Both Malabar and Gordons Bay are protected, calm locations ideal for building confidence in open water. Many of our ocean water-fear clients begin here.
Is parking available?
Yes:
Malabar Beach: Free street parking on Fishermans Road.
Gordons Bay: Meet at the Clovelly Surf Club carpark.
Are toilets and showers available?
Malabar Beach: Public toilets and change rooms are nearby.
Gordons Bay: Public toilets are available at nearby Clovelly Beach (5–7 minute walk).
What should I bring?
Swimwear, towel, goggles, sunscreen. A wetsuit is optional, especially in cooler months. Fins or snorkels can be used for added confidence.
Are sessions private or group-based?
We offer both. You can book private 1:1 coaching or group sessions with our Saltwater Squad depending on your needs and availability.
What’s the water depth like?
Depth varies with tide and distance from shore — starts shallow (waist-deep) and gradually deepens to approximately 5m, making it ideal for progression and comfort.
